Defective Hip Replacement Products Now Facing Federal Scrutiny

depuy-hip-implant-recall-150x150.jpgInjuries related to defective hip replacement products are climbing and now the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is getting involved. In response to mounting concerns about the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants and a growing number of hip replacement recall lawsuits, the FDA just announced it will subject the devices to a two-day expert review that could lead to rigorous new standards. That's good news for consumers who received defective hip implants during hip replacement surgery.

An FDA's advisory panel is set to meet June 27-28. The panel will gather input from scientists, researchers, patients and medical practitioners to help regulators decide whether to impose new testing standards and review requirements to be met before a device can be sold in the United States.

Hip replacement surgery is a common, costly procedure; about 270,000 surgeries are performed each year in the US. Hip replacement surgery is intended to provide greater mobility and alleviate pain for people with joint problems, including arthritis. But evidence has been growing for years that all-metal hip implants fail at higher rates than systems that use other materials. Patients who receive them have also been shown to have high concentrations of metal ions in their blood.

DePuy, for example, is recalling the ASR™ XL Acetabular Head System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System. If you received a DePuy Hip Implant anytime since 2003 you may have an ASR Hip Implant system in place. The DePuy company may have known about problems with its product for some time. The ASR implants were taken of the market in Australia in 2009. Earlier this year the company warned doctors of the higher than expected failure rate of these products. Finally the company issued a recall. According to the companies own internal findings greater than 10% of people receiving these devices required a subsequent surgery.

Here are the warning signs for a potentially defective hip implant:

* Unexplained Hip Pain
* Thigh Pain or Groin Pain
* Pain with Walking
* Pain Rising from a Seated Position
* Pain with Weight Bearing

Florida is among nine states listed in a Johnson & Johnson recall of thousands of tubes of its Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) sampled a batch of the product and found excessive levels of a naturally-occurring, but antibiotic-resistant, bacteria identified as coagulase-negative Staphylococci. The bacteria can lead to health problems with the central nervous system or lead to urinary tract infections.

Around 2,200 bottles of the lotion - with lot number 0161LK - have now been recalled from shops across Southern states, including Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Defective Hip & Knee Implants Causing a New Problem?

Florida is home to thousands of hip and knee replacement surgeries every year and some of the products used in those replacements have been recalled. Now, there is new evidence of the metal on the implants shedding tiny particles of metal as they wear. In some cases, this has led to patients showing elevated levels of cobalt and chromium in their bloodstream.

At this time, it is not possible to know who will experience a reaction, what type of reaction they might have, when the reaction will occur, or how severe the reaction will be. However, according to the FDA, the metal particles around some implants can cause damage to bone and/or tissue surrounding the implant and joint.

DePuy and Zimmer are leading manufacturers and sellers of artificial orthopedic implants. Zimmer's leading knee replacement system is the NexGen Knee Replacement System and has been in use since 1994 with relative success. However, certain Zimmer NexGen knee replacement systems have been linked to pain, loosening of the implant and failure of the replacement knee leading to revision surgery. The NexGen CR-Flex cementless implant, in particular, has had higher than expected rates of failure, either by loosening of the product or need for complete replacement. These failures are believed to be due to a design defect in certain components.

Know what to look for if you think your hip or knee replacement part is defective:

* Unexplained Hip Pain
* Thigh Pain or Groin Pain
* Pain with Walking
* Pain Rising from a Seated Position
* Pain with Weight Bearing

Tylenol Toxicity #1 Cause of Liver Damage

Acetaminophen toxicity cases are rising fast. Just because you can buy many medicines without a prescription doesn't mean they're entirely safe. Over-the-counter drugs can kill you. Liver toxicity from acetaminophen poisoning is by far the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States, according to numerous medical reports around the country.

Acetaminophen belongs to a class of drugs called analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers). Acetaminophen relieves pain by elevating the pain threshold. It reduces fever through its action on the heat-regulating center of the brain. The side effects of acetaminophen toxicity include yellow skin or eyes, hives, itching, bleeding (bloody urine, black stool, bruising, or pinpoint red spots), fever, sore throat and decreased urine output.

Defective Tires Back in the News

Sadly, three children were killed this past week in Stuart, Florida when their Ford Explorer had a tire blowout and the driver lost control of the suv. If a defective tire caused this accident, the auto maker and/or the manufacturer of the defective tire can be held liable for the accident and resulting injuries. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Since this case involves loss of human lives, the families of those victims can also receive compensation to cover things such as funeral expenses, etc. In cases like this, the last thing the families need to think about is money. They need a good attorney handling the paperwork and details so they can focus on grieving and healing.
